News What is a Portable Air Conditioner?

A portable air conditioner (Portable Aircon) is a self-contained portable system ideal for cooling single rooms or spot cooling. They typically sit on the floor and are easy to install & store. Most models also have wheels so you can move them to different rooms, making them a nice alternative to assist a struggling central HVAC system. They’re commonly used in bedrooms, classrooms, offices, medical rooms, computer rooms, garages, film & TV shoot, warehouses (spot cooling).  As well as other places where they don’t get much airflow such as sunroom, basements or data centres.

All portable aircons remove warm air and moisture as they cool. The air has to be exhausted to another location so generally go outside the space through a window, a sliding door, wall or drop ceiling. Therefore, depending on the location of the hose(s), it will require a respective installation kid to set up the hose to exhaust the warm air outside. Once the exhaust hose and the installation kit are set up, simply plugin and the AC will start cooling!

As we mentioned before portable aircon also remove moisture from the room so they need to evaporate it. As a result, there are different mechanisms that they deal with the condensate water.

  • The most basic one is to empty manually the condensate tank. This could be as often as 8 hours to just once a month, depending on the humidity of the space and the time of use.
  • Another common way to get rid of collected moisture is to attach a drain hose to the drain port.
  • The most popular are those that have fully self-evaporative technology. This means that the aircon automatically evaporates moisture out the exhaust hose along with warm air.

When it comes to portable air conditioners, one size does not fit all in fact size is a very important fact to consider when you are hiring one. If the portable aircon is too small, it will continue to run without fully cooling the whole area. If the aircon is too large, it will cool the area without removing excess moisture from the air. It results that the room is cool but clammy.
